Denver Receives State Grant Funding
Posted at: 05 / 5 / 08

The Denver Fire Department has been awarded $24,972.50 in State matching funds.  On Monday May 5th Department of Insurance representative Joan Creasman presented Chief Jay Flynn with the check from the Office of State Fire Marshal 2007 Rescue Grant.  Along with the check, a letter of congratulations was also presented from State Fire Marshal Jim Long.

While on site at Denver, all of the grant equipment purchased was audited by Mrs. Creasman to ensure full compliance with State grant guidelines.

To date Denver has been awarded $83,687.50 in matching funds through the Office of State Fire Marshal grant program.  Unfortunately, this may be the last grant through OSFM that Denver is eligible for.  The rapid growth of the Denver area has pushed the department outside the limits of population and staffing levels to qualify in the future unless there is a change in legislation to raise the limits.

These funds were used to purchase 10 full sets of new bunker gear, 10 sets of surface water rescue equipment, 12 voice alert pagers, 1 portable hydraulic rescue pump, 1 hyraulic combination rescue tool and a supply of 1/2" rescue rope.  The total cost of all the equipment was $51,861.04

The Denver Fire Department is just one of the departments through out Lincoln County to have benefited from these grant funds.  The total amount of grant funds approved for Lincoln County departments to date is $868,666.82.  This represents a protion of the $79,298,354.00 awards across the State of North Carolina since 1989.

KIDVILLE ROAD STUMP DUMP FIRE
Posted at: 01 / 29 / 08

At 10:56 a.m. Denver Fire Departments Kidville Sub-Station received a call to investigate smoke in the area. Engine 12 arrived less than a minute later at a stump dump located about ½ mile from the fire department. Fire fighters found approximately two acres smoldering. The fire marshal arrived on scene approximately 15 minutes later.
The owner of the stump dump was using track hoes and bull dozers to contain the fire. He was also using water sources on his property including a well and pond to put water on the hot spots. At 12:45 p.m. Denver Fire Department personnel returned to the station.
At approximately 3:10 p.m. fire fighters responded to a second call for smoke in the area. The fire continued to smolder.
Currently (9:50 p.m.) there are three departments on site – Denver Fire Department, East Lincoln Fire Department and Alexis Fire Department along with the Lincoln County Fire Marshal and private contractors. In all there are six fire apparatus and approximately 15 fire personnel. The fire remains in an approximate 2 acre area. The cause is possible spontaneous combustion. The stump dump contains all natural fill and is approximately 30 feet deep and is layered.
The objective of the fire department is to keep the fire contained and clear an area around the perimeter.
UPDATE - As of 10:27 p.m. the fire line has been cleared around the perimeter.  Fire fighters remain on scene to watch the wind and will remain overnight.
